We have a running joke in our house that I am addicted to technology. For the past few birthdays and Christmases, I have received from my husband, a camera, a tablet, an iPod, a laptop, a Wii, and a Netbook. I guess the hubs thinks that electronics are the way to my heart. Do I love them? Yes. Am I obsessed with using them? Eh. I think there are more important things in life, however, I can say that much of the technology that I use has brought me great joy by connecting me with my friends and family and, that alone, makes me just a little obsessed.
I know there are a ton of people out there (my parents included) that think that all this new technology and all these new ‘gadgets’ out there take away from the real social aspect that should exist between humans. However, I tend to disagree and think that it brings us all closer than ever! With that said, here are five ways in which I believe technology has impacted my life (and my family’s) in a positive way!
1. Reconnecting on Facebook
I have two cousins that moved away when I was in eighth grade. I spent many days when them growing up and they were a huge part of my life. Because of circumstances that were beyond my control, I never saw them again after they moved. I missed them but never knew how to contact them. My mom would send Christmas cards but they eventually started to be returned. With the help of Facebook, we found each other and it completes my heart to know that they are always just a few clicks away.
2. Starting my blog
Blogging. When I first called myself a blogger, it sounded so nerdy. But, nerdy or not, I loved what I was doing and loved starting my day writing my posts and, also, catching up with the bloggers that inspired me daily. Little did I know, at the time, that simply reading those blogs would open me up to a whole other community of people that I never knew existed. Looking back, I cannot imagine my life without some of the relationships that I have formed through my blogging and am thankful every day that I have an amazing network of support and friendship…and that it mostly comes from people that I have never met in person!
3. Sharing photos
Do you remember phones before they had cameras? What the heck did we do with them? Actually make phone calls? Imagine that! I can honestly say that I use my phone multiple times a day to take photos and haven’t really used a real camera in forever! I love sharing them on Instagram, Twitter, and all those other crazy social media outlets that are out there. Even more enjoyable than connecting with others out in the world, nothing warms my heart more than receiving a picture of my best friend’s little boys hugging each other, or of my pups cuddling together with the caption, “Missing our mom,” or of a random person or scene that my best friend thought was just ‘way too funny’ to try and explain in words! Sometimes, those are the things that make me smile and help me make it through a rough day.
4. Living a healthy life
Isn’t it great to be able to find pretty much anything you want after just clicking a few little buttons? The internet (and those crazy blogger friends I talked about earlier) provide a wealth of information that has lead to my family and I living a healthier life, both mentally and physically. If I’m stumped for what to make for dinner or what the heck to do during my evening workout, I know exactly where to go because I am constantly flooded with ideas on healthy recipes and killer fitness plans! With the ease of access today, there is really no excuse not to live the healthiest life you can and I gladly take advantage of each opportunity I get to incorporate any healthy habit into the life of me and my family.
5. Keeping organization a priority
I love having a calendar right at my fingertips. I love being able to jot down an idea or note when I don’t have a pen and paper. I love being able to pull up a bank statement in less that 30 seconds. I love having my emails and messages accessible through one little touch. I love having a grocery list organized by type of item and aisle. I love…well, I could go on and on. I am so busy and having ways to keep me on track makes me life much easier…as well as my family’s and friend’s. A stressed out and cranky wife, pup mom, co-worker, and fitness instructor is not someone you want to cross paths with…and that’s how I feel when I’m not organized!
My phone, my laptop, my tablet…and all the other “techy” things that I use every day have made my life run much smoother. Have they made my life perfect? Not by a long shot…but, I can definitely say that have improved it greatly. Do I still love having a good old-fashioned phone conversation? Do I still read a black and white newspaper? Do I still enjoy sitting with friends over lunch or a cup of coffee? Yes, yes, and yes. I do not see technology as replacing those important happenings in my life…I actually see it as making me appreciate them more! There is a time and place for the world of tech and it’s just important to find the ways in which is fits into your life the best!
With much Love and Laughter,
Something to share: In what ways has technology improved your life? Do you feel that technology tends to separate us as social beings or brings us closer together?
