There are some things that you know you shouldn’t do.
Those things that you think twice about?
Those things you hesitate to start?
Those things that make that little voice say, “Hmmm…that’s probably not the best idea.”
But…you do them anyway.
That was me yesterday. Last week, I mentioned that I was thinking about joining a gym for a few months because I wanted to get back into running and I am not one to make myself get outside every day when it’s below freezing and snowing. I am still undecided as to whether I’m actually going to join or not, but Lee and I worked the same shift yesterday so we decided to hit up the gym after work. Lee is already a member and it was just $5 for me to go for the day. No biggie.
My plan was to run. I didn’t have a time or distance in mind. I was just going to hop on the treadmill and see what happened. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went for a run. There are so many other ways I get cardio in during the cold winter months. I give so much credit to those of you out there that bundle up and head out for miles and miles of runs. Brrrr!
Anyway, when I was packing my bag for the gym, I grabbed the first shoes I saw. They were my old shoes. The shoes I have had for years. I was in a hurry and couldn’t find my newer ones so I had no choice. My little voice told me that I probably shouldn’t run in the them, but I thought, “I won’t be running that far so it will be totally fine.”
Three miles later…
…I finish my run and cool down for a minute or two and step off the treadmill. Oh.em.gee.
The bottom of my feet felt a little tender and my pinky toenails kind of felt like they were about to fall off. Greeeeeat. We had dinner plans with our friends so I quickly ripped off my shoes, changed my clothes, and threw on the boots I was wearing. Again. Oh.em.gee. My feet were killing me! I was pretty sure I had a blister. A mean old blister. When I got home, I checked it out…
Yep. A blister. And my toenails still felt like they were going to fall off.
My idea of running in my old shoes? Fail. Major, major fail.
I’m sorry, shoes. I will never be working out in you ever again. Blisters aren’t my idea of cool.
One good thing that happened, though? I felt amazing during my run. I could have gone longer but time just didn’t allow that. It felt great to get my legs moving again. Might I be joining the gym and becoming a slave to the treadmill? I’m definitely leaning toward ‘yes’!!
